Happy Monday, Thieves! A Saturday afternoon had is back in our usual hangouts. Augie was in the yard with Casse up against the property line (for a few minutes anyway), Justin was in Brooklyn, and John Holl was in the basement home office. We're inching closer to returning to the same bar and are eager to do so. In the meantime, these remote shows have been a lot of fun because we're able to bring on guests that might not otherwise be in New York.  To wit: this week's accomplice is Bob Kunz of Highland Park Brewery in Los Angeles. We spoke to Bob minutes before he began re-opening his brewery after COVID-19 so we got a little taste of what other breweries might be going though in the coming weeks.  He also brews an Italian pilsner so... yeah. We talk about that as well.  Bob also got to join in the Justin-provided blind tasting beers. Was one of them the greatest beer ever poured? Holl wouldn't know. Listen in to find out why.

Happy Monday, Thieves! We’ve got a fun show for you today, talking pilsners and lagers with one of the best in the business. Chip McElroy is the owner and founder of Live Oak Brewing in Austin, Texas. Live Oak is the older craft brewery in Austin and Chip is somewhat of a legend in the industry. We had a great chat about some of our favorite styles of beer. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 270 - Marcus Baskerville, Weathered Souls Brewing (Black is Beautiful Beer Collab)

Weathered_Souls_Black_is_Beautiful_LABEL_FLAT_V2.jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! This week we’re chatting with Marcus Baskerville of San Antonio’s Weathered Souls Brewing. Marcus started the Black is Beautiful beer collaboration in the wake of the murder of George Floyd. Carton got on board so we decided to ask Marcus to call in and discuss the inspiration behind the worldwide collaboration and what goes into the recipe. To quote from Marcus’s Black is Beautiful Beer site:

“The Black is Beautiful initiative is a collaborative effort amongst the brewing community and its customers, in an attempt to bring awareness to the injustices that many people of color face daily. Our mission is to bridge the gap that's been around for ages and provide a platform to show that the brewing community is an inclusive place for everyone of any color. We are asking for all breweries and brewers far and wide to raise a glass with us in unison and participate in this collaboration.”

Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 269 - John Kimmich, The Alchemist (COVID-19 Quarantine Edition)

Happy Monday, Thieves! Have you heard of this beer called Heady Topper? It's an IPA and is brewed in Vermont. It recently arrived on shelves in Jersey and so Augie and John wanted to learn a little more about it, so they had Justin ring up the brewer who readily agreed to come on the show.  Turns out his name is John Kimmich and along with his wife Jen founded the Alchemist, a brewery in Stowe, Vermont that has been around for quite some time. They talk about hop character, freshness, specialty drops, and Florida weed. It's one to listen to fresh, and right from your ear buds.

Happy Monday, Thieves! Our audio quality for these quarantine shows is much improved thanks to Zoom. We're pretty excited about that because we get to hear every single word from today's accomplice.  Andy Parker is the chief barrel herder at Avery Brewing Co. in Boulder, Colorado and, as you'll hear time and time again, a big influence on Augie.

From talking about the early days of the brewery to the big changes that have come its way in recent years, Andy shares some of the science that goes into his beers, drops some knowledge on sales and marketing, and takes the time to talk about how he's spending his days in isolation.

Plus, the blind tasting is back thanks to Justin Kennedy. He sent Augie and John beers in the mail, wrapped in foil and did a damn fine job stumping them both. It's good to be back in the swing of things.

Episode 267 - Jen Blair, New Realm Brewing (COVID-19 Quarantine Edition)

Jen-Blair.jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! This week we're trying out some new audio options and recording the show from Zoom. We think it sounds a little bit better but let us know what you think. We're also bringing back the concept of the black glass.

Executive Producer Justin Kennedy picked up some beers locally and sent to John and Augie. They were wrapped in foil (and even a bottle cap was covered) and the guy's spouses poured into black glasses. It brought some fun back to the show.

And Justin was got an assist from the beer selection from today's guest: Jen Blair of New Realm Brewing Co.

She sums up what's she's doing and where she has been:
"Currently, I’m training approximately 30 New Realm employees to take their Level 2 Cicerone exam in April at both our Atlanta and Virginia Beach locations, while studying for my Master Cicerone exam as well as the next level of my BJCP certification. I also co-host a podcast called False Bottomed Girls that’s focused on beer education for all, but women in particular. My newest project is a plant-based food and beer pairing series with my friend and fellow Advanced Cicerone and beer educator, Asa Stone. Our goal is to provide beer lovers who follow plant-based diets with their own version of The Brewmasters Table. I started both projects because I saw a lack of women educators in both the podcasting and beer pairing areas.

Prior to joining New Realm, I was the Executive Director for the North American Craft Maltsters Guild, which is an international trade organization dedicated to promoting craft malt and providing resources and education for small-scale craft maltsters. I not only provided members with education and support but also traveled throughout the US and internationally to present about craft malt and malt sensory. Beer is an agricultural product and I continue to advocate support for local farmers and businesses throughout the beer supply chain."

We had a lot of fun talking with her about recipes, brewery growth, and education. Hope you enjoy listening.

Wishing you a calm, peaceful, and reflective Memorial Day.

Happy Monday, Thieves! We’re come back at you this week from the B-Rizzle mobile Zencastr studios with our old friend Lee McComb of Chicago’s Half Acre Beer Co. We first met Lee a few years ago at Extreme Beer Festival and quickly became fast friends. Lee’s the type of thoughtful, laid back dude that we love running into in this industry. He’s recently transitioned to the head of the barrel program at Half Acre’s Wyld Cove branch and called in to talk to us about how the company is dealing with the pandemic and what he’s interested in drinking lately. As always, we had a great conversation and look forward to sharing a beer in person with him sometime in the not too distant future, hopefully.

Happy Monday, Thieves! We have another quarantine episodes for you today. (The norm for the foreseeable future.) This week we’re welcoming Khris Johnson of St. Petersburg, Florida’s Green Bench Brewing. We’ve known Khris for many years but every time we’re down in his neck of the woods, he’s been busy throwing the annual Foedre for Thought Festival which is traditionally held the night before Hunahpu’s Day. We finally got a chance to have Khris call in and talk to us about what’s going on down there and how his company’s adapting to the new reality we’re all facing. But fear not, we also found plenty of time to talk about non-Covid related stuff, like smoked beers and saisons. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Happy Monday, Thieves! We hope you’re all staying healthy, sane, and well hydrated out there in quarantine land. We got on a call this weekend with JC from Trillium Brewing in Boston. We’ve had JC on the show a few times and always enjoy hearing about what he and his crew are up to. This time around, of course, we’re talking about how Trillium is adapting to these unprecedented times, offering regional curbside delivery and boosting taproom sales. We cover this and a bunch more. Tune in and let us know what you think! (Oh, and we tried recording with a new platform this week. Hopefully it will improve the listening experience. Episode 262 - James Queally, LA Times journalist and author

Episode 262 - James Queally, LA Times journalist and author

20200309_180318.jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! Don't adjust your radio. This week we're at Treadwell Park.

Right before the closures started to happen and bars were closed in March we gathered at our usual hangout for a regular episode. Then the world changed so we moved our focus to the phone shows.

But we didn't want this to sit on the shelf for too long. So, here's James Queally, who was just starting his (now currently on haitus) book tour for his debut novel "Line of Sight."

He's a crime reporter for the Los Angeles Times but was born in New York and cut his teeth as a scribe for the Star-Ledger of Newark. That's where he met Holl.

Queally is a shit talking raconteur and his book is getting all the praise it deserves.

“LINE OF SIGHT signals the start of a great career. Veteran journalist James Queally brings all his insider knowledge of the intersections of crime and police and politics and media in a story that never stands still for a single page. It’s an amazing first novel.”
―Michael Connelly, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Harry Bosch series

Augie even jumped in with his own review, despite not having read the book. It's worth the listen.

Holl has read the book and can't recommend it enough. If you're from Jersey, you'll appreciate the attention to detail. If you like suspense, you're in for a good ride. It's available where books are sold (or downloaded) and we encourage you to get a copy today.

Meanwhile, Queally went back to his roots for the beers in the black glass and we had some fun teasing out the flavors.

Here's hoping we get back to the regular setting soon, but for now we hope you enjoy this throwback to simpler times.

Next week, we're back to phone shows and have a bunch of great guests lined up.

If there's someone you want to hear, or have some thoughts let us know what you think by chiming in on our social media pages or simply by emailing us at stealthisbeerpodcast@gmail.com

Happy Monday, Thieves! On the phone today is Alex Kidd, the mind behind Dont Drink Beer, the review site that is also responsible for Barleywine is Life. He's an attorney in California by day and amateur Tik Tok star at night. In this episode recorded with Augie and John at their homes they get into podcast mechanics, beer reviews, being funny in beer and what it's like to be anonymous (for a while at least). We break into some fun beers from our own cellars and wind up taking the conversation in all kinds of fun directions.

Happy Monday, Thieves! We hope you are all taking care, staying safe and healthy at home. Before the quarantines really got strict, John drove down to Augie's house for an afternoon of cellar raiding and phone calls.

We called up Mr. Tomme Arthur, founder of the Lost Abbey and a brewer of fine quality sour ales to find out how Covid-19 was impacting his brewery, California in general, and to get a handle on what he was drinking.

In between deliveries (because the man is committed like that) he shared some thoughts on the beer business, the future, and gave us just a little bit of hope.

Episode 259 - 5th Anniversary Show with Jeff O'Neil, Industrial Arts Brewing (COVID-19 Quarantine edition)

unnamed (2).jpg

Happy Anniversary Thieves! This isn't a joke episode. It's an actual anniversary show.

Five years ago we launched this podcast with an idea to have a weekly conversation about beer, over beer, among friends that think about beer way too much. Our first home was Barcade in Jersey City and on show number one we had Jeff "Chief" O'Neill on to talk about a brewery he was getting ready to launch.

Each year for our anniversary since he's come on to talk about how the brewery, Industrial Arts, has grown, to troll Holl with Orval, and to give Augie a little pushback.

We wanted to do this show with you all as part of a live recording but had to postpone that for the obvious reasons. Instead we jumped on the phone for chat with cheif, opened some bottles from our cellar, and otherwise had a good time.

And here it is, a bonus episode for you this week to help pass the hours in quarantine.

Thanks for the support, the great laughs, the letters, and the beers over these last five years. We're looking forward to a lot more.

Screen Shot 2020-03-30 at 12.34.25 PM.png

Happy Monday, Thieves! We're back in quarantine at Augie's dining room table this week, drinking from his cellar and talking about all that is happening in the world. This week, joining us from a safe distance and on the phone is... well... he won't give us his real name, but it's the guy that runs Worst Beer Blog.

If you like the bad side of beer culture you're likely aware of Worst Beer Blog. It's on all the social media sites highlighting silly, funny, or downright dumb things breweries and beer drinkers do. "Peter" told us how he picks what goes up, what he likes to avoid, and talks about his local beer scene in California (if that's actually where he really is from).

Then we call Justin for a letter. It's an all around perfect show. Hope you enjoy listening.

Happy Monday, Thieves! These are strange and unsettling times but we're here for you with an all new episode. Last weekend Holl headed down a mostly empty Garden State Parkway to Augie's house to record a few shows. They sat well apart from each other, washed their hands, and didn't once clink glasses.  Our accomplice is Matt Monahan, co-founder/owner, Other Half Brewing, Brooklyn, NY. We called him up and checked in on what was happening with the brewery's locations in New York and Washington, D.C. It's hard out there for everyone but Monahan offers up a silver lining for fans of his brewery.  Because of the format we had to forego the black glass, but we did pick beers from Augie's cellar and asked folks to vote via facebook live.  Shows like this are going to be the new normal for a while. Happy Monday, Thieves! First off: We're sorry to say that our live show scheduled for March 28, 2020 at Industrial Arts will be postponed. You know why.  Now on to today’s show…

You don't often get to meet you internet heroes. But today, SaisonSlayer69, former head brewer Cabarrus Brewing (North Carolina) and blogger at gutterboyforever.com sits down at the back table of Treadwell Park for a conversation.  You might also know him as C.T. McGaha and he is a representative for Kellogg Selections, a Charlotte-based wine distributor. He used to brew beer at Cabarrus Brewing, and he says he may work in beer again. In his bio that he sent to Justin, McGaha professed a love for  Riesling and pizza. For his black glass he decided to troll Holl and give Augie diabetes. Well played. Tune in and let us know what you think!

unnamed (1).jpg

Hey Ya'll Back to business today at Treadwell Park with Zac Ross, Marlowe & 12 Percent Beer Project.  There's all kinds of interesting brewery relationships these days and this week Ross stops by the table to talk about his. Zac was a brewer at Kent Falls for several years before moving to Virginia to head the barrel program at Aslin Beer Co. Last year, he moved back to Connecticut to become head brewer at Twelve Percent's new production brewery in North Haven, CT. Twelve Percent produces beer on a contract basis for Stillwater, Evil Twin, Omnipollo, Dugges, Hoof Hearted, and many, many other brands.  One of those brands is Zac's Marlowe Artisan Ales, a brand named after his late grandfather (the logo is actually his signature from a piece of music he composed for Zac's parent’s wedding). Zac says he hops to eventually build out a physical brewery and taqueria for Marlowe.  He brought some fun beverages by for the black glass and we got some good insight into how his project is working out.  Let us know what you think by chiming in on our social media pages or simply by emailing us at stealthisbeerpodcast@gmail.com

Episode DBTB2020 - Drink Beer, Think Beer with Augie Carton

84212eff-170c-42a7-99e9-a1edce8f5865 (1).jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! We're shaking things up this week.

We're happy to present an encore airing of John Holl's Drink Beer, Think Beer podcast. Augie is the guest. Some of you might remember when we aired the premiere episode of John's new show a few weeks back. Well, here's the one you really wanted all along.

This particular episode has been a long time in the making. Despite co-hosting a show with Augie Carton for the last four years, John Holl hasn’t really had a chance to sit down with him one-on-one for an interview. It’s something Holl has wanted to do, and judging by the emails and social media pings from listeners of Steal This Beer, the podcast they co-host, it’s something many others wanted as well.

Holl sat down with Carton, the co-founder of Carton Brewing at his house on a recent Saturday morning. They drank some champagne and  some of the beers Carton has been working on. They talked about building out recipes, fine dining influences on his brewing career, and how observing interactions, tastings, and general curiosity from his father, mother, and their friends laid the ground work on what he is trying to accomplish today.

Each week on our show, Holl sees Carton tease out flavors from beers that are poured blind, and while the brewer is always confidant and occasionally wrong, he does manage to bring some nuance to the forefront most of the time.  So, that’s where the conversation begins: on flavor.

Happy Monday, Thieves! NYC Beer Week is in full swing and we’ve got one of the city’s newest brewers on the show today. Brett Taylor is one of the co-founders and brewers at Brooklyn’s Wild East Brewing, slated to open any day now in the borough’s Gowanus section, mere blocks from Threes, Strong Rope, Other Half, and Folksbier. Wild East is already crafting yeast-driven beers out of their brewery so be sure to look for them on draft around the city. Tune in and head what Brett has to say about the process and starting a brewery in one of the most expensive cities in American. Get at us and let us know what you think!
