Jeppe has been a friend of the show for a while and appeared in one of our early episodes almost four years ago. He’s done a lot in the intervening years including opening a brick-and-mortar brewery in the Ridgewood section of Queens. Tune in to hear all about it and find out what beers he brought for us to blind. Fun show!

Episode 211 - Andy Crouch, beer writer, is back

d674d876-3b07-4c56-a6f0-f127294d003b.jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! We've known Andy Crouch for years. We consider him a friend. His opinions on beer have long been the fuel on which we feed and his unapologetic nature fits right in with the show. We like Andy. We like him when we're in Boston at festivals or when we see him in taprooms, or just online.

So imagine our disappointment when he came on the show and tried to kill us.

Over the years we've had some pretty rough beers. We've tasted all manner of infections, off flavors, and ingredients that didn't live up to expectation. What Mr. Crouch brought to us for the black glass hit a new level of low. We'll have him back on, sure. But not until we can get the taste of this crap out of our mouths. It might be awhile. On this episode, we likely talked about a lot of things. Give a listen, it's hard for us to remember anything besides the pain.

Episode 210 - Brian Yaeger, beer writer, donut expert

20190319_185416 (1).jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! This episode finds us back at Barcade. We're messing with the timeline and the line up this week. Brian Yaeger, the writer, pun master, and doughnut expert is back on the show this week, sitting down with John and Casse while Augie was on a trip and Justin was engaged elsewhere. So, we decided to go back to our roots and get the sounds of arcade games in the background while we talk about the intersection of craft beer and artisan doughnuts. Yaeger, it so happens, is working on a book about the topic. He fills us in.

Since Casse was in the Justin seat pouring the beers, John pulled in local Jersey City brewer Brian Kulbacki of Departed Soles to sit in the Augie chair and drink out of black glasses. He was a good sport, even after John mispronounced his last name more times than is reasonable. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 209 - James Murray, Ballast Point Brewing

James Murray Headshot.jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! We're back at Treadwell Park this week as we head into a whole new year of episodes. We recorded this right after our 4th anniversary show with Chief, so things are well lubricated as we welcomed James Murray, the VP of brewing operations at San Diego's Ballast Point Brewing.

The brewery has made a big impact on beer over the years, from popularizing grapefruit flavor in IPA (we talk about zesting and other methods) to their sale to Constellation Brands a few years back for $1 billion. James has been around for it all and shares the story of the brewery as well as some traditional beers for the black glass.

Chief (as he’s colloquially known in the industry) tells us about his upcoming expansion plans and how his brewery has evolved over the last couple years. We had a blast talking to him as always. Happy Monday, Thieves! Beer programs for restaurants don't just happen. When they are done right, it's because of the hard work of knowledgable consultants who pick the right mix from the right breweries. Our guest this week, James Tai of Beeracolyte talks us through his process and shares his insight on how to effectively build brands.

Plus, he brought a beer that we had recently on the show, but did some new things to our taste buds. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 205 - Kyle Hurst, Big Alice Brewing

Big Alice Brewing.jpeg

Happy Monday, Thieves! There are certain things we take for granted in this beer universe of ours. Like, how good we have it these days when it comes to visiting breweries in the boroughs. But, not too long ago there wasn't much in the city, save for stalwarts like Brooklyn Brewery. Kyle Hurst of Big ALICe Brewing stopped by the table at Treadwell Park recently to talk about the early days (and long nights) at the brewery, the new barrel room, and to reminisce about the beginnings of NYC Craft Beer. Plus, if you've ever wondered who Big Alice is... we'll tell you, but you're asking the wrong question. Patrick Donagher is in the B-rizzle Mobile Studios today. (Though, considering Casse's prolonged absence, perhaps we should rename it the J-rizzle Mobile Studios. Has a nice ring, doesn't it?) Anywho! Pat Donagher is a legend in the NYC beer bar scene (the original Ratte N Hum, The Jeffrey, Fools Gold, etc.) and has now become a brewery owner. We got him in the hot seat for a chat and obviously we all had a lot of fun. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Happy Monday, Thieves! We have a fun show for you today with Kevin Mullen of Troy, NY’s Rare Form Brewing. Happy Monday, Thieves! We're back for one final week in Colorado. This time we welcome Paul Arney of Ale Apothecary. His brewery in Bend, Oregon is, as the kids say, rustic as fuck. We totally geek out on his beers made by utilizing downed trees and foraged ingredients.

Plus, we get into the business side of things a little bit as he talks about putting it all on the line to start his own brewery after a career spent working for others. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 201 - February News and Mail Show

unnamed (3).jpg

Hey y’all, happy Presidents Day. We're taking a break from Colorado-recorded shows to catch up on the mail and what's happening with beer today. Augie and John convened at Treadwell Park in Manhattan to talk about corn syrup, kids in breweries, and a boneheaded article that appeared in a beer newspaper earlier this month. Anne Becerra joined the guys and supplied one of the two blind beers tasted. Justin brought us the other one. It was delightful. Tune in a let us know what you think!

Episode 200 - Josh Grenz, Verboten Brewing & Barrel Project

Episode 200 - Josh Grenz, Verboten Brewing & Barrel Project

Happy Monday, Thieves. Welcome to episode 200! Hard to believe, isn’t it? We’re continuing with the Colorado shows and today we welcome a local brewer, Josh Grenz of Verboten Brewing to the hotel round table for a talk about barrel aging beers, brut IPA, and more.

Grenz began his craft beer journey several decades ago. Raised in Fort Collins, Colo., he was raised around craft brew stars New Belgium and Odell Brewing Co. After years of beer appreciation, he learned to homebrew and the obsession took firm hold. After homebrewing for several years, he and his wife, Angie, decided they were ready to take the leap to business owners and craft beer cultivators. In 2013, they opened Verboten Brewing in Loveland, Colo., with a focus on creating unusual, innovative beers.

Episode 199 - Travis Hixon, Blackberry Farm Brewery

Happy Monday, Thieves! Today we’re welcoming Travis Hixon of Tennessee’s Blackberry Farm Brewing. Anyone who’s listened to the show knows that Augie is a longtime fan of the saisons Blackberry has been making for the last few years, so we were excited to sit down with Travis and hear about the processes there. Travis brought a couple of really fun beers for the blind tasting, so be sure to listen for those tasting notes. As always, get as us and let us know what you think!

Episode 198 - Nile Zacherle, Mad Fritz Brewing

IMG_7521.JPG

Happy Monday, Thieves! The Rocky Mountain high is kicking in. This week, we've traded our booth at the Lagerhaus in Denver for a dining room table inside a hotel suite in Breckenridge. With the snow whipping around outside, we welcomed Nile Zacherle of Mad Fritz Brewing Co. to the show.

Mad Fritz is located in California's Napa Valley... so you can guess what Nile and Augie talked about. Still, we did sneak in some beer conversation, talking about terroir, foraging, and the concept of Origin Beer.

John was the awkward third wheel while a new brewer bromace blossomed. Thank goodness for hangovers, because we were able to take the whole show slow, let thoughts develop and the conversation took some fun turns.

We're already planning a trip to California to visit Nile. Check out the episode and let us know what you think!

Hey y’all! The second of many episodes we recorded at high altitude drops today. This one is with Nick Nunns, the founder and brew master of Denver's own TRVE Brewing.

We've known Nick for a while, through the festival circuit and having a bunch of friends in common, and when we were deciding which breweries in Denver we'd like to record with, Nick's was at the top of the that list. We had a great chat with him and got to know a little bit more about the metal-influence that permeates the TRVE aesthetic (hint: it's a little more tongue-in-cheek than you might expect). Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 196 - Ashleigh Carter & Bill Eye, Bierstadt Lagerhaus

20190113_111205.jpg

Hey Y'all,

Anyone who has ever listened to the show knows how much Augie and John love pilsner. So it should come as a surprise to no one that on a recent trip to Colorado their first stop was to the Bierstadt Lagerhaus in Denver.

Our guests this week are brewers and owners Ashleigh Carter and Bill Eye and over quite a few rounds of their famous slow pour pilsner we got into the history of their brewing system, philosophy on beer, and some spirited arguments.

The brewery has been a personal favorite for quite some time, so having the chance to talk all things lager with two people who are even more passionate about the style than we are was a lot of fun. Plus, Ashleigh wasn't shy about giving Augie shit, so Holl was super happy with this one.

Episode 195 - Steve Luke, Cloudburst Brewing

Episode 195 - Steve Luke, Cloudburst Brewing

Welcome to 2019, Thieves!  We're kicking off a new year with an episode that we recorded last year. It's our second show from Boston on the morning after our live audience episode and right before the Beer Advocate IPA Fest.

Stealing Beer with us this week is Steve Luke, the founder and brewer at Cloudburst Brewing in Seattle. He's celebrated for his recipes and take on the brewing industry, and also well known for wearing a shirt emblazoned with "Fuck AB" that he wore on stage at the Great American Beer Festival in 2018.

He's got his reasons for that wardrobe choice: He once worked at Elysian, before the mega brewer's acquisition. In addition to talking about how that sale has altered his local beer landscape he took Augie and John on a guided tour of his brewing career.

And there's something about Boston that brings out the best beer choices in people.  Steve brought with him a bottle that was so special, so inspired that we actually thought about blanking out the name on the tape so that we could hoard all the goodness for ourselves. But, we love you too much to ever actually follow through.

Check out the episode and let us know what you think!
