Episode 221 - Ulrike Genz & Andreas Martin, Schneeeule Brauerei

IMG_6099.jpg

Summer is in full swing so we need a beer that is both refreshing and up to the task of keeping us hydrated and interested glass after glass. Thankfully we have two guests who can help with all that.
Ulrike Genz and Andreas Martin of Berlin's Schneeeule Braueri stop by the back room of Treadwell Park downtown to talk about the real Berliner Weisse.

It's a lively conversation that touches on tradition, location, ingredients, and, of course, woodruff syrup.
Located in Berlin, Germany, Schneeeule (Pronounced: "schnee oy-la" ) is the only brewery in the world currently specializing in the production of traditional Berliner Weisse. Their signature mixed yeast culture is a blend of Lactobacillus and Brettanomyces strains from historical bottles found in friends basements, flea markets and eBay. Tune in and let us know what you think!

torch-crown.PNG

Hey Y'all. It's Monday at 5p.m. and we're at Treadwell Park with Joe Correia and John Dantzler of New York City's Torch & Crown Brewing. Joe may be a familiar face to some of our Garden State friends, having done a stint at Kane Brewing. He and John opened Torch & Crown in the city earlier this year and are currently brewing out of the old Chelsea Brewing facility in the Bronx.

Soon, they'll open their taproom and brewpub in in SoHo (yes, you read that right, a brewery is coming to SoHo!) and we had a great time chatting business and brewing with these guys.

They brought some fun beers for Augie and John to try, including one that may be more than a little familiar to Augie. If you follow us on Untappd, you can get more information.

Also, be sure to go on iTunes, Stitcher, Google Play, Spotify, or wherever you listen to the show and give us a five-star rating.

Hey Y'all.

It's Monday at 5p.m. and we're at Treadwell Park with Dave Martin of (coming soon) Mindful Ales.

If you're on the beer fest circuit, a regular beer Instagram user, or keyed into the homebrewing scene, you might have come across Dave and his beers.

We get into what it takes to open a brewery these days. What he hopes to accomplish with his own space, and how he decided to make the jump from prolific homebrewer to pro.

Plus, he brought some tasty delicious beers. If you follow us on Untappd, you can get more information.

Happy Monday, Thieves! We're here to slide you into a shortened work week after your relaxing, beer filled holiday weekend. Don’t listen if you’ve somehow managed to avoid it until now.)

Also, Holl catches us up on his recent visit to China where he signed some books, drank a lot of beer (and bijou) and tried to befriend his government appointed tail.  Justin provided the beers for the black glass. The guys had some thoughts. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 211 - Andy Crouch, beer writer, is back

d674d876-3b07-4c56-a6f0-f127294d003b.jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! We've known Andy Crouch for years. We consider him a friend. His opinions on beer have long been the fuel on which we feed and his unapologetic nature fits right in with the show. We like Andy. We like him when we're in Boston at festivals or when we see him in taprooms, or just online.

So imagine our disappointment when he came on the show and tried to kill us.

Over the years we've had some pretty rough beers. We've tasted all manner of infections, off flavors, and ingredients that didn't live up to expectation. What Mr. Crouch brought to us for the black glass hit a new level of low. We'll have him back on, sure. But not until we can get the taste of this crap out of our mouths. It might be awhile. On this episode, we likely talked about a lot of things. Give a listen, it's hard for us to remember anything besides the pain.

Episode 210 - Brian Yaeger, beer writer, donut expert

20190319_185416 (1).jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! This episode finds us back at Barcade. We're messing with the timeline and the line up this week. Brian Yaeger, the writer, pun master, and doughnut expert is back on the show this week, sitting down with John and Casse while Augie was on a trip and Justin was engaged elsewhere. So, we decided to go back to our roots and get the sounds of arcade games in the background while we talk about the intersection of craft beer and artisan doughnuts. Yaeger, it so happens, is working on a book about the topic. He fills us in.

Since Casse was in the Justin seat pouring the beers, John pulled in local Jersey City brewer Brian Kulbacki of Departed Soles to sit in the Augie chair and drink out of black glasses. He was a good sport, even after John mispronounced his last name more times than is reasonable. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 209 - James Murray, Ballast Point Brewing

James Murray Headshot.jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! We're back at Treadwell Park this week as we head into a whole new year of episodes. We recorded this right after our 4th anniversary show with Chief, so things are well lubricated as we welcomed James Murray, the VP of brewing operations at San Diego's Ballast Point Brewing.

The brewery has made a big impact on beer over the years, from popularizing grapefruit flavor in IPA (we talk about zesting and other methods) to their sale to Constellation Brands a few years back for $1 billion. James has been around for it all and shares the story of the brewery as well as some traditional beers for the black glass.

Happy Monday, Thieves! Beer programs for restaurants don't just happen. When they are done right, it's because of the hard work of knowledgable consultants who pick the right mix from the right breweries. Episode 205 - Kyle Hurst, Big Alice Brewing

Happy Monday, Thieves! There are certain things we take for granted in this beer universe of ours. Like, how good we have it these days when it comes to visiting breweries in the boroughs. But, not too long ago there wasn't much in the city, save for stalwarts like Brooklyn Brewery. Kyle Hurst of Big ALICe Brewing stopped by the table at Treadwell Park recently to talk about the early days (and long nights) at the brewery, the new barrel room, and to reminisce about the beginnings of NYC Craft Beer. Plus, if you've ever wondered who Big Alice is... we'll tell you, but you're asking the wrong question. Patrick Donagher is in the B-rizzle Mobile Studios today. (Though, considering Casse's prolonged absence, perhaps we should rename it the J-rizzle Mobile Studios. Has a nice ring, doesn't it?) Anywho! Pat Donagher is a legend in the NYC beer bar scene (the original Ratte N Hum, The Jeffrey, Fools Gold, etc.) and has now become a brewery owner.
