Episode 362 - The Gang Catches Up

Episode 362 - The Gang Catches Up

Happy Monday, Thieves! The four of us spent yesterday morning catching up for this episode of STB. It had been a while since we’d gotten together sans guest, and it was fun to catch up with what everyone’s been up to. John and Casse talk about going back out in the world, Augie tells us about his favorite new hop blend, and Kennedy cracks open a thoroughly old school IPA brewed with…. coriander?! (You’ll never guess what brewery it’s from. Or maybe you will.) It was a fun, laid back show and we enjoyed recording it. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 360 - Matt Moon, Another Moon Brewing

Happy Monday, Thieves! We're talking to Matt Moon today who just launched his new project, Another Moon Brewing, a couple of weeks ago. Like many of his peers in the Hudson Valley, Matt specializes in a single style of beer, namely saison packaged in 750ml bottles. Matt talks about why this style is near and dear to his heart and we discuss brewing with fungi foraged from the surrounding environment. It's a thoughtful discussion enhanced with a couple of treats in the black glass. Tune in here and let us know what you think!

Episode 359 - Jennifer Newman, Young Lion Brewing

Happy Monday, Thieves! We’re chatting with Jennifer Newman this week, the CEO and co-owner of Young Lion Brewing outside Rochester, NY. Jenn’s not on the brewing side of things so we talk about more of the business aspects of brewing rather than malt bills and hop schedules. It’s a great conversation nonetheless and we have a little bit of fun with some old favorites in the black glass, to boot. Tune in here and let us know what you think!

Happy Monday, Thieves! We’re talking low-abv beers this week with Offset Bier Co. from Park CIty, Utah. Conor and Patrick join us to discuss how they brew within the restrictions of their state’s laws and how that impacts their decisions on what to brew. We also discuss embracing creativity within restraint and have a little bit of fun (and then not so much fun) with the black glasses. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 356 - Kai Ryssdal, Marketplace

Happy Monday, Thieves! We had a most excellent time recording with our new friend Kai Ryssdal this weekend. Kai is the host of Marketplace, an American Public Media radio show and podcast that’s broadcast every weekend evening on many NPR stations around the country, including WNYC in the great New York-New Jersey area. Kai was such a familiar voice that we felt instantly familiar with him and had a great rapport as we navigated beer and economics and much, much more. Tune in here and let us know what you think!

Happy Monday, Thieves! We have a great show today with Zoe Licata, a reporter from Brewbound. Episode 354 - Heather McReynolds, Hopsteiner

Happy Monday, Thieves! We're talking to our friend Heather McReynolds today, currently of Hopsteiner and previously of Guinness and Sixpoint. We've known Heather for a while and have a great discussion about hops (duh) and other more esoteric topics, like Augie and grape jelly and the old Sixpoint brewhouse in Red Hook. If you listen long enough, you'll hear us talk about Meatloaf, Evan Watson, and Weber Grill's apology letter this past week. Justin had some real fun picking he beers this week and things go nearly off the rails as a result. We hope you tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 353 - Alex Zolli, Brooklyn Publican/Beer Witch

Episode 353 - Alex Zolli, Brooklyn Publican/Beer Witch

Happy Monday, Thieves! One of our favorite Brooklyn publicans and bartenders, Alex Zolli, is joining us this week to talk about the state of the craft beer bar scene. As we know, craft beer bars have slowly been on the decline over the last several years, due in large part to the changing ways people consume beer. (More at brewery taprooms lately than at craft beer pubs is the current thinking.) We talk to Alex about why craft beer bars are still important and what publicans and owners can do to compete with taprooms. It’s a good chat and we have some fun in the black glasses, too. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 352 - Hutch Kugeman, the Brewery at CIA

Happy Monday, Thieves! We have a great guest this week - our friend Hutch from the Brewery at the Culinary Institute of America. Hutch was supposed to be on the show way back in 2020 but we ended up canceling the in-person shows right before he was scheduled and then never got him on in the Zoom studios. That changes this week as we sit down to talk about the brewing education program at CIA. It’s a fun, educational show and we really enjoyed having him on. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 351 - Trevor Rose-Hamblin & Matthew Moldenhauer, Old Irving Brewing

Episode 351 - Trevor Rose-Hamblin & Matthew Moldenhauer, Old Irving Brewing

Happy Monday, Thieves! We’re switching things up this week, flipping the show on its head in some ways. After nearly seven years of prohibiting brewers from bringing their own beers on the show, we decided to go for it and taste some new-to-us beers that a brewery shipped us a few weeks ago while having said brewer as our guest. We didn’t plan for it to turn into this—a show where we taste and discuss the beers live with the brewer—but that’s where we landed. We wanted to freshen things up and create a new spin, and we’re really happy with how it turned out.

For our first foray into this non-blind, taste-in-front-of-the-brewer conceit, we welcome Trevor Rose-Hamblin of Chicago’s Old Irving Brewing. Trevor’s sale guy, Matthew Moldenhauer, reached out and sent the beers to us right before the holidays, so all four of us are in on the action. We taste and discuss the beers one by one and give our honest feedback while hearing from the brewery why he made the beers and what ingredients and thoughts went into them. We also had our Patreon supporters as part of our “live” audience (though they were mostly on mute). All in all, it was a great time and something we’ll probably do again this year.

Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 350 - Holiday Tradition with Joel Shelton

Happy Monday, Thieves! We’re keeping it short and sweet today because we’re all technically off the clock, enjoying the last gasps of 2021. We’re yet again closing out the year with our good friend Joel Shelton who’s helped it usher out each of the past four seasons. Joel’s back today and we have some fun in the black glass (one good fun, one bad fun). Tune in and let us know what you think. AND HAVE A GREAT NEW YEAR’S!

Episode 349 - Todd DiMatteo, Good Word Brewing

Happy Monday, Thieves! We’re calling down south this week with Todd DiMatteo of Georgia’s Good Word Brewing. We’ve been hearing great things about this brewery for a while and wanted to check in and see what the deal is. Turns out there’s a whole lot to love and an interesting story behind it to boot. Todd talks about how he got started as a homebrewer and how the transition from home to pro was a little shaky at first. We also have fun in the black glass with a pair of classics. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 348 - Mike Beebe, Untied Brewing

Happy Monday, Thieves! Our friend Mike Beebe of NJ’s very own Untied Brewing joins us this week to catalogue his journey across America that eventually landed him in the Garden State. Mike’s been a workaday brewer at places in California, Alaska, and Colorado, and he’s now back east at Untied. We chat about working at breweries big and small and fall in love with at least one beer in the black glass. Good show, tune in and let us know what you think!

Happy Monday, Thieves! As we head towards the end of the year we're keeping some traditions alive. Em Sauter of Pints and Panels is back with us, this time calling in from her cartooning headquarters in Connecticut. Happy Monday, Thieves! We're welcoming Ron Extract of Washington State's Garden Path Fermentation this week. Ron and his partner Amber Watts make beautiful beers, ciders, and meads with a real sense of place in the Skagit Valley of Washington, sourcing nearly 100% of ingredients from the region. Episode 345 - Eric Larkin, Cohesion Brewing Company

Happy Monday, Thieves! After two weeks of birthday celebrations, we're back to our regularly scheduled programming this week with Eric Larkin of Denver's brand spanking new Cohesion Brewing. Eric is a veteran of both the East Coast and Colorado beer scenes, and has worked at some of our favorite breweries (Allagash and Odd 13 to name just two). At Cohesion, he's doing something a little different, specializing exclusively on Czech-style lagers of all varieties. He walks us through how he transitioned from brewing hazies to focusing on Tmavés and Černés. The first black glass discussion devolves into Holl defending McSorley's while the second beer knocks or collective socks off. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 344 - Birthday Celebration Part 2

Happy Monday, Thieves! The rolling party that is Augie Carton's birthday continues this week as we pick up exactly where we left off. Evan Watson kicks off this round asking about rauchbier, a topic we truly love. Then we read a letter, discuss malt, previous shows, and get a masterclass in Meatloaf.

Next week we're back to the usual format and internet recording, but hope you enjoyed this audio romp as much we as did. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 343 - Birthday Celebrations with Evan Watson & Hillary Barile (Part 1)

Episode 343 - Birthday Celebrations with Evan Watson, Plan Bee (Part 1)

Happy Monday, Thieves! When the man has a birthday, we get together and celebrate. Last week we had some fun at Carton Brewing as Augie celebrated himself. A party is always better with friends so we're joined by Evan Watson of Plan Bee Farm Brewery and Hillary Barile of Rabbit Hill Farms. The trio talk about Planning Jersey, a collaboration beer, and then we go down the weeds of ping pong conversation as pints are poured. We had so much fun, in fact, that this is only part one. We'll have the rest of the conversation next week, but for now settle in and enjoy this lively, sprawling conversation.
