Episode 342 - The Gang Catches Up

Happy Monday, Thieves! A low-key week on the show as it's just Augie, John, and Casse shooting the breeze for a bit and reading letters. Kennedy checks in from a kid's birthday party. No black glass this week as we open beers from our cellars and fridges, but we'll be back at it next week with a guest and the usual fun. Tune in and get at us!

Episode 341 - Catching Up with Anne Becerra and Treadwell Park

Episode 341 - Catching Up with Anne Becerra and Treadwell Park

Happy Monday, Thieves! We're not quite there, but as the world opens up we've been pining for a properly poured draft beer, the sound of conversation around us, the wafting aromas of buttered popcorn.

So, we've invited Anne Becerra onto the show. You'll remember that she practically runs Treadwell Park, our old recording stomping grounds. She's always been excellent for insight on beer and breweries, but also the service side of things. As a combination of COVID-19, bad customers, and the economy have danced a rough tango over the hospitality industry. Anne has seen it all and has thoughts on the current state of things and an appeal for kindness.

She's not drinking out of the black glasses, but Augie and John had a good go with things as Justin again picked some gems from the world's most wonderful bodega.

Listen in, support your local businesses and tip well.

Episode 340 - Bob Sylvester, Saint Somewhere Brewing

Episode 340 - Bob Sylvester, Saint Somewhere Brewing

Happy Monday, Thieves! We’re back in the Zoom studios this week with our pal Bob Sylvester of Saint Somewhere Brewing. Bob was/is a legend in the Florida (and beyond) beer scene and was one of the first dedicated saison producers in the USA. He recently retired and moved to the foothills of North Carolina but is still somewhat active in the beer community (as we discuss in the first part of the show). For the second part, Augie prods him to get more than a little of the curmudgeonly flavor Bob is known for. It’s a fun, lively discussion that goes a little long (we could’ve kept going but had to split for our second show). We hope you tune in and enjoy!

Happy Monday, Thieves! This week's show feels like the Before Times in the very best of ways. We gathered at Carton Brewing on a recent weekend to welcome Jeff Alworth back to Steal This Beer. The Portland, Oregon, resident was on the east coast supporting the 2nd Edition of his best-selling The Beer Bible, and in addition to talking about writing, we go deep into "romantic facts" that surround brewing, lagers and cask ale, and the general merriment that comes with getting together at the pub for proper pints. As a bonus, the black glasses were pulled from the Casse cellar and our pal went deep with some thoughtful selections. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 337 - James Queally, author and reporter, is back

Happy Monday, Thieves! We’re talking to our friend James Queally, an investigative reporter for the LA Times and the author of the upcoming mystery novel, All These Ashes. If his name sounds familiar, that’s because he’s been on the show before. In fact, he was our last in-person recording back in the before times when we hung out and recorded in-person at Treadwell Park. In the interim 18 months, James has written a new book and he joins us to about that and what else he’s been up do while quarantining in LA. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 336 - Chad Henderson, NoDa Brewing (CBC 2021)

Happy Monday, Thieves! Over glasses of Slow Pour Pils, and mugs of Helles, Augie found a new kindred spirit. Chad Henderson of NoDa Brewing in Charlotte, NC joins the show live from Bierstadt Lagerhaus in Denver. It's our second show of the day and the place is jumping with brewers from around the country but from our table on the mainstage, it's all intimate as Henderson, the head brewer and co-owner opens up about awards, hopping, and the creative process and has Mr. Carton swooning, plotting collaborations, and generally excited to be talking about proper brewing. Holl is there drinking rauchbier and we even get a drop in from Casse. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 335 - Tyson Arp, Nebraska Brewing Co. (CBC 2021)

Happy Monday, Thieves! We hit the road for some lager and wound up at just the right place. Last week the Craft Brewers Conference was held in Denver so Augie, John, and Casse wound up going west and made Bierstadt their first stop. Tyson Arp, the long-time head brewer of Nebraska Brewing Co. was also in town and joined them for beers (we forego the black glass since there was Rauchbier on tap) and talk about longevity, customers, barrels, and process. BlindTiger_Logo.png

Happy Labor Day Monday, Thieves! Today we’re checking in with out friend Dave Brodrick from NYC’s Blind Tiger Ale House. Dave is still in exile in Vermont and the talk largely centers on his life up there, growing grapes for wine and not leaving his property for extended periods of time. We also talk about the evolution of the Tiger as it relates to America’s craft beer scene and what it means to be a truly great neighborhood bar above all else. Dave foregoes the blind glasses so we do that part towards the end. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Happy Monday, Thieves! We’re talking to Ben Neidhardt of Connecticut’s OEC Brewing today. Several of Ben’s beers have landed in the black glasses over the years, and they’re almost always well received, so we were excited to talk to Ben about his brewing processes and philosophy. We also discuss OEC’s link to B. United (Ben’s father’s beer importing company) and how that business spawned the creativity behind OEC. For the black glasses, we explore a seasonal favorite and an absolute classic. Tune in and let us know what you think!

IMG_2517.jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! After recently having their beer on the show and really enjoying it, we asked the brewers of Nod Hill in Ridgefield, CT to join us, drink blind, and talk about how to make a proper patersbier. Kat Michaud & Kyle Acenowr did not disappoint.

Augie was running late so Holl took the reins and immediately dove into a conversation on lagers and rauchbier. From how the pandemic has shaped the business, to Kyle's brewing career, to the summer Kat spent working at a biodynamic winery, we get into it all and wind up having some fun with the black glass. Because our last conversation with Dave Infante about his reporting on Brew Dog was cut short by time, we asked him back to keep the information coming. He's back and talking about the brewery's finances and plans for the United States. It's a fascinating look at a well-known brand and no one has dug deeper than Dave. We're glad he's back again to share some insight. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 330 - Mike Karnowski, Zebulon Artisan Ales

zebulon.jpeg

Happy Monday, Thieves! Our accomplice today is an industry veteran from North Carolina—Mike Karnowski of Zebulon Ales. Mike’s owned a home brew shop in New Orleans, written a book on home brewing, and worked for one of the first brewpubs in Asheville. He’s currently the owner and sole brewer at Zebulon in Weaverville where he goes against the grain in nearly every way. Not content with making commercially successful beers, he crafts historically based beers along with some funky modern creations that defy categorization. Mike’s a fun interview and we had a great time chatting with him. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 329 - Dave Infante, Beer Writer

Happy Monday, Thieves! We’re talking to James Beer Award-winning beer writer Dave Infante today. We booked Dave to talk about the breadth of his writing for sites like Thrillist and VinePair but ended up going super deep and specific on his recent expose of the Equity for Punks program from BrewDog. if you haven’t read the article, start here and then listen to the episode (or do the reverse). We don’t discuss much more, and we barely touched the tip of the iceberg, so we vow to get Dave back on in a couple weeks to complete the conversation. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 328 - Van Carney, Pen Druid

Episode 328 - Van Carney, Pen Druid

Happy Monday, Thieves! We have a fun show today that touches on familiar themes we’ve discussed on the show over the years—namely those based around our many discussions with Evan Watson of Plan Bee. We found Evan’s brethren in the hills of Virginia in the Carney brothers of Pen Druid Fermentation. The brothers play in the pscyh-rock band Pontiak by day and brew beer in their downtime using a wood-fired kettle and mostly spontaneous inoculation. Augie’s in his full element here while Holl and Justin just sit back and listen. It was a fun time and we can’t wait to get down to Virginia to visit these guys! Episode 326 - Just the Three of Us (Casse got Hitched Edition)

Summer-Sun.jpeg

Happy Monday, Thieves! This is just about the freshest episode we’ve released in over 15 months. Recorded today, close to 5p on Monday, it’s bursting with freshie goodness. Longstoryshort, we tried to record an episode partially in person with a call-in guest last week but had some, ummm, technical difficulties in the process. So instead of posting a From the Vault episode, John, Augie, and Justin decided to jump on a Zoom real quick to fill you guys in on some current shenanigans. Not the least of which is Casse getting hitched just yesterday. Anyway, it’s probably the shortest episode we’ve ever recorded, and you’ll thank us for that. But we had fun and we think you’ll dig it. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 324 - Fee Doyle, Beer Witch Brooklyn

Happy Monday, Thieves! This week on the show we get a peek behind the process. Fee Doyle of Beer Witch is our accomplice and she reveals that she has been the one helping Justin Kennedy pick out the beers for the black glass. It's deeper than that, though as we talk about how the pandemic has shaped retail sales, how to build a beer flight, and what she looks for when it comes to flavors and breweries. It's a rollicking good time and we encourage you to check out this great store next time your travels bring you to Brooklyn. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 323 - Michael Tonsmiere, Sapwood Cellars

Happy Monday, Thieves! We're talking about clean beer and wild beer with the man who wrote the book on American sours. Michael Tonsmiere took some time away from the brewhouse and his writing desk to talk with us about what is inspiring his brewing and what has changed since he released "American Sour Beers: Innovative Techniques for Mixed Fermentation."

Tonsmiere shares what it is like working at Sapwood Cellars, the brewery he co-founded in Columbia, Maryland and where he looks for creativity and tries to educate drinkers on flavors and terminology. As they are fond of saying at the brewery: "Beer should be a pleasure to savor, not a challenge to conquer!" Tune in and let us know what you think!
