Episode 322 - Lisa Allen, Heater Allen Brewing

LM- CBB-HeaterAllen-114_2.jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! We’re thrilled to have Lisa Allen joining us today. Lisa is the head brewer at Heater Allen Brewing in McMinnville, Oregon, a brewery that holds a special place in the heart of Steal This Beer. You see, in the infant days of the show (think back to Episode 4) one of Lisa’s beers appeared in the blind tasting and knocked the socks off Augie and John for its purity and quffability. That beer was Heater Allen Pils, the revered flagship beer of the brewery that Lisa’s father started back in 2007. Lisa’s since taken over the brewery and continues the legacy of making crispy lagers that don’t make it far outside the Pacific Northwest. Tune in and hear about how she’s continuing the legacy and traditions of Heater Allen while also putting her own spin on things. Let us know what you think!

Episode 321 - Logan Ackerley, Wallenpaupack Brewing

IMG_9631-700x325-1.jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! Did someone say Rauchbier? The conversation this week starts there with our accomplice Logan Ackerley. He's the head brewer at Wallenpaupack Brewing Co. in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania.

A few weeks back he released a Grodizikie and then barrel aged some of it, because why not. From there we're talking about how the brewery has changed in the 4 years it has been open and some of the fun little brews he's making on the brewery's pilot system.

Of note: his tea beers. Listen in as the breakfast beverage takes over not only our conversation but the black glass as well. We're off to a great start this summer. Hope you enjoy tuning in.

Episode 320 - Tod Mott, Tributary Brewing

unnamed (10).jpeg

Happy Memorial Day Monday, Thieves! We’re talking to a New England legend on the show today, the one and only Tod Mott of Maine’s Tributary Brewing Co. Tod’s been brewing professionally for several decades and is responsible for creating some of our favorite beers on yore, including Harpoon IPA and Portsmouth Brewery’s Kate the Great. A few years ago, Tod and his wife Galen opened their own shop just north of Portmouths in Kittery, Maine, called Tributary. Tod talks to us about his journey, the water profile differences between Portsmouth and Kittery, and how to identify a possible appendix rupture. Tune in here and let us know that you think!

Episode 319 - Megan Parisi and Alexis Degan

Presentation1-page-001.jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! We’ve all been following closely the work of Brienne Allan (AKA @ratmagnet on Instagram) over the last week and half. Instead of having the discussion among the four of us (all straight white cis men), we asked former Executive Director of the New Jersey Brewer's Association, Alexis Degan, and current Head Brewer at Sam Adams Boston Taproom, Megan Parisi, to join us to discuss the routine instances of sexism and toxic behavior they experience daily as women in the beer industry. (In case you’re behind on the news, check out articles here, here, and here as well as Brienne’s stories highlights on Instagram to get up to speed.) We forego the black glass this week for a full-on discussion. Tune and let us know what you think.

Episode 318 - Adam Rosenthal, Wayward Lane Brewing

Happy Monday, Thieves! Much to Justin’s delight, we have another New York State farm brewery on the show this week. Adam Rosenthal of Wayward Lane Brewing in Schoharie, NY, joins us to talk about his journey in beer from the early days of mobile canning, to running a brewery in Denver, to decamping for the East Coast to open a proper farm brewery operation. We hit on a many STB buzz words (yarrow, pawpaws, English milds) and drink some fun beers in the black glasses. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 317 - Tommy Keegan Tribute with Interboro, Newburgh, and Industrial Arts

Episode 317 - Tommy Keegan Tribute with Interboro, Newburgh, and Industrial Arts

Happy Monday, Thieves! We’re paying tribute to a local legend this week. Tommy Keegan of Kingston, NY’s Keegan Ales unexpectedly died of heart attack on April 30 and we wanted to reflect on his legacy in the craft beer community in the greater NYC and Hudson Valley region. Tommy was one of a kind, a true open-hearted person who touched nearly everyone he encountered. We’re joined by Jesse Ferguson of Interboro, Geoff Wenzel of Industrial Arts, and Paul Halayko of Newburgh Brewing. Jesse and Augie reminisce about Tommy dropping by Carton in the early days, Paul tells us about Tommy reaching out when Newburgh was getting up and running, and Geoff talks about what it was like working for Tommy in the early days (when Geoff was legally too young to even drink the beer he was helping brew). We talk about our experiences with and the influence of Tommy’s Mother’s Milk and Hurricane Kitty and why those beers were some of the most formative early drinking experiences for us. It was a melancholic stroll down memory lane and we hope you enjoy our tribute. Let us know if you have any you would like to share yourselves.

Episode 316 - Lars Dahlhaus, Beer Importer & Beverage Market Specialist

LarsHeadshot.jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! You may recall a special episode from the beginning of April conducted in another language. Our friend Lars Dahlhaus of Baldor Specialty Foods was graciously in on the gag and played host on that episode. And just like our subsequent English language episode with Matthias Trum, we recorded a stand-alone episode with Lars to talk about his storied career importing European beers into the US. Lars has been responsible for bringing in some of the classics (Rothaus Pils, Thomas Hardy’s Ale) and continues working with Baldor Specialty Foods as their Beer & Beverage Market Specialist. It was a fun episode and hope you enjoy. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 315 - Curtain Up Beer Project (The Happy Hour Guys & Gun Hill Brewing)

1.jpeg

Happy Monday, Thieves! We’ve got a trio of guests on the show today to talk about the Curtain Up Beer Project, a relief fund for The Actors Fund and associated charities meant to help workers in the Broadway and live performance industry. Mark Aldrich and Jimmy Ludwig of The Happy Hour Guys founded the project along with Dave Lopez of the Bronx’s Gun Hill Brewing. Much in the spirit of Other Half’s All Together and Weathered Souls’ Black is Beautiful, the open source collaborative beer project aims to raise funds to support an industry decimated from the covid-19 pandemic. Jimmy and Mark are both full-time actors so this project is near and dear to their hearts. And you can hear it in their voices—we get into some serious conversation and the implications of a continued shutdown in their industry. We hope you tune in and help support the dozen of breweries who are helping making this beer for a good cause.

Episode 314 - Mike Kraai & Travis Lancaster, Drowned Lands Brewery

IMG_1097.jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! You probably know this already but since the pandemic, Justin has been sending Augie and John beers for the blind tasting. Several of those have come from a new-ish brewery in Warwick, NY, called Drowned Lands Brewery. The beers are usually big hits on the blind panel, so we decided to call up the proprietor and head brewer and have them on the show. We had a great chat with Mike and Travis, covering topics like their approach to brewing with foedres and what goes into their homespun but hip label design. For the blind tasting, we had one hit and one that was maybe not such a hit.....Tune in here or wherever you listen to podcasts, and let us know what you think!

Tapping a traditional wooden barrel - Matthias Trum - Schlenkerla Breewer in 6. family generation.jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! A couple weeks ago, we released an episode you may have had a little trouble understanding. Well, turns out we recorded a real version of that episode with our new friend Matthias Trum of Schlenkerla. Anyone who listens to the show knows we’re big fans of rauchbier and of Schlenkerla in particular, given its historic keystone status in the genre. We asked Matthias to Zoom into the B-Rizzle Virtual Studios and to our surprise he happily agreed! We had a great time talking with him about upholding his family tradition while also exploring creativity within the bounds of rauchbier production. I think we were all a little giddy but it was a fun talk and we can’t wait to have Matthias back on, hopefully in person next time! Tune in and let us know what you think.

Episode 311 - Zach Nichols, Cellar West Artisan Ales

Episode 311 - Zach Nichols, Cellar West Artisan Ales

f96ad6_0714471d1d474432a503a7a96d8d0b29_mv2.jpeg

Happy Monday, Thieves! Welcome to another raucous episode, recorded from our various bunkers, complete with heavy sighs, Vasse musings, hot takes from the black glass, and minutes long questions from the Orange clad one.

We are minus Kennedy on this episode as he was off taking in some hikes in the Hudson Valley, but joining us is Zach Nichols, the founder, owner, and brewer at Cellar West Artisan Ales.

Zach began his journey in beer in 2009 while working at a small bottle shop in his native Madison, Wisconsin. Shortly thereafter he spent time as an assistant, and later lead brewer, at a small brewpub in the midwest countryside, crafting traditional lager and occasionally experimenting with eccentric Belgian farmhouse ales.

In 2012 his now wife, Rachael, lead Zach to the Front Range where he spent several years working in the Colorado brewing industry, including a stint in the world of mead-making.

In January 2017, after years of brewing observation and application, Zach's longstanding dream of a small, artisanal beer company was brought to life in a little garage space in North Boulder. There, nestled at the base of the foothills beside autobody shops, a homeless shelter, and strip club, Rachael and Zach founded Cellar West Artisan Ales.

We should note that we recorded this episode a few weeks before the tragic mass shooting occurred in Boulder, Colorado.

As a huge snow storm was getting ready to roll in, Zach tucked in to tell us about his brewing career, his fascination with mixed fermentation and love for lagers. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 310 - Jeremy Banas, author Celis Beer: Born In Belgium, Brewed In Texas

unnamed (10).jpeg

Happy Monday, Thieves! Get ready for some hard hitting journalism as we welcome Jeremy Banas to our den of thieves this week. Banas is a Texas-based writer and author and his latest book tracks the history of witbier from Beligum to Austin through the story of Pierre Celis.

The book is called Celis Beer: Born in Belgium, Brewed in Texas (American Palate) and is available for $21.99! From the rescuing of a dying style to the ups and downs of owning a business and acts of God getting in the way, Banas tells us the story of a beloved and important brewer.

Along the way we're all drinking blind out of black glasses and Kennedy, as usual, does not disappoint with his selections. Check out Jeremy's book where fine books are sold. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Happy Monday, Thieves! It's been a while since we last caught up with Todd Boera, the co-founder of Fonta Flora Brewery in North Carolina, so we invited him into our COVID-19 free telephone studios for an update. He was kind enough to bring Jeremy Inzer, the head brewer along with him.

Inzer was was a brewer at Live Oak in Austin, TX but is now having fun on the farm, experimenting with different fruits and herbs, and working hard to keep the native yeasts happy.

They joined us for the black glasses and if you're looking for a fun game to play at home, take a drink everytime someone says "paw paw". Tune in and let us know what you think!

When you have a hops related question (like, say, the origin of “noble hops”) there is only one person to call. Stan Hieronymus, the famed journalist, author, and font of knowledge on lupulin is here this week to educate.

He’s written thousands of articles about beer, is the author of many books including For the Love of Hops and Brew Like a Monk and sends out a monthly newsletter called Hop Queries.

Not only does he join us for the black glass tastings, but he goes deep into the history of several varieties of hops and even shares some knowledge on what the future will bring to our IPAs and lagers.

Always a gentleman and with unparalleled insight, Stan is a guest we’ll have back soon.

Episode 307 - Brandon Jones, Yazoo Brewing & Embrace the Funk

Episode 307 - Brandon Jones, Yazoo Brewing & Embrace the Funk

image000000-1.jpg

We're hard pressed to find another brewer that has also won an Emmy award, so it's a real treat to welcome Brandon Jones onto the show this week. He's the brains and brawn behind Embrace the Funk, the wild program out of Yazoo Brewing in Nashville, Tennessee.

From talking hops and fermentation to his various pet peeves, Jones is one of the more thoughtful brewers in America today. He shares his expertise and passion in a way that is infectious.

And while it might not be an EGOT, he's now the first person to have appeared on all of Holl's various interview podcasts. He was obviously saving Steal This Beer for last, since Augie says it's the best.

Speaking of Augie, this episode gives birth to yet another collaboration beer, this time with Jones and Even Watson. We'll keep you posted.

When we started this recording it seemed like the postal service was going to let us down with Jones' delivery, but just as glass one was being discussed, the beers arrived, properly chilled (thanks to some frigid middle Tennessee weather) and we had a full complement of palates.

Jones is a man who knows the funk. We're glad to have him on the show this week. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Happy Monday, Thieves! Our friend Greg Doroski is on the show this week. Greg's one of those guys we've known since the beginning, was on an early episode of the podcast, and we'd kind of lost touch with over the last few years. Why? Because he moved out of Brooklyn after leaving Threes Brewing to settle back into family life on the North Fork of Long Island. We haven't talked to him in a minute so it was tons of fun catching up. He's back at Greenport Harbor now, where he started off, and is doing a lot of cool things there. We may have even planted the seeds for an upcoming Carton-Greenport Harbor collab live on the show. Tune in and hear all about it!

Happy Monday, Thieves! We have our old friend David Walker back on the show this week to talk about the brewery’s 25th Anniversary. David was gracious enough to ship us some Firestone Walker beers, including the always amazing DBA Double Barrel Ale which we explore in detail. We also talk about the famed Wookey Jack and how it set the standard for the once revered but now nearly extinct Black IPA. David plays along with the black glasses with a couple of throw-back styles from David’s peers. It was a fun show and always great chatting with the British half of Firestone Walker. Happy Monday, Thieves! We’re keeping local in the Garden State this week with a call-in from our friend Hillary Barile of Rabbit Hill Farms Malting in Cumberland County. Hillary supplies malt to many of Jersey’s best breweries so we wanted to get her on the show to talk about the evolution of craft malting right here in our backyard.
