Happy Monday, Thieves! Holl has gone wondering again. You might have heard Augie and John talking last week about a new podcast "Drink Beer, Think Beer" an effort Holl is doing with a newly formed media company called Beer Edge.  His weekly podcast gets to the bottom of every pint with brewers, growers, and industry leaders on all aspects of the brewing industry. From ingredients and process, to philosophy and the art in each beer, the podcast is hosted by long-time journalist John Holl and is available on all the major podcast platforms. Beer Edge releases new episodes of Drink Beer, Think Beer with John Holl every Wednesday.

To get the Thieves caught up, here's episode one (there's currently nine shows available with Mr. Carton scheduled to be guest 10 this Wednesday), recorded in Belgium in November with Matt Brynildson of Firestone Walker Brewing Co.  Visit the website "Drink Beer, Think Beer" and subscribe on your favorite podcast platform because you can never have too many beer podcasts in your life.

STB NEWS-2.jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! It's been a busy few weeks in beer land. Maybe you've heard about some of the sales and transactions that have happened. New Belgium sold to Lion Little World Beverages. Ballast Point sold back into private hands. Anderson Valley also changed hands again.

Augie, John, and Casse sat around Mr. Carton's dining room table over the weekend to record a special news show. Augie has some hot takes. Holl tries his best to read the news, and Casse decided to show off his new watch. The trio also talk about Holl's new one-on-one podcast "Drink Beer, Think Beer" and how Augie will be a guest on an upcoming episode.

Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 242 - Miguel Rivas, The Beer Trekker

The-Beer-Trekker-logo.png

Happy Monday, Thieves! For the second week in a row we are back next to the popcorn machine at Treadwell Park. There's so much diacetyl in the air but thankfully Miguel Rivas is here to take our mind off of such things.

Miguel is a Brooklyn based photographer, his background in photography comes from his passion for live music shows, traveling and the artistry of craft beers. Born in Paris, TX, raised in Venezuela and he has been calling NYC home for the last 17 years.

You likely know him best as the founder and curator of The BeerTrekker project, a photographic journey and storytelling about the beer culture and the people behind them.

Since 2017 Miguel has been invited as a beer judge to some of the most important beer competitions in Latin America and over the last year he traveled extensively in the region to places like Costa Rica, Panama, Mexico, Ecuador and Argentina to explore and document the local beer scene.

We spent a lot of time talking about his travels and he wound up pouring some special bottles garnered during his trips. They were a delight to drink. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Happy Monday, Thieves! We got the prime seat right next to the popcorn machine at Treadwell Park, so this week it's all about diacetyl. Thankfully Gage Siegel is back on the show to help distract us from all that fake butter. You might know Gage from Beer Menus. After a brief stint in the Midwest he's back in New York and has launched a beer brand called Non Sequitur. Gage is here to tell us all about it and what he’s trying to achieve this this new project. Fun stuff! Do it up and let us know what you think!

Happy Monday, Thieves! We're geeking out this week with Jeff Cioletti. The author, writer, and editor stopped by the mobile studio to talk about his new book "Drink Like a Geek: Cocktails, Brews, and Spirits for the Nerd in All of Us."

Recorded at Carton Brewing, Jeff got a chance to taste the galaxy inspired Blue Milk IPA that came out a few months ago and we talk about everything from Doctor Who to James Bond and Game of Thrones.

The book is the combination of Jeff's worlds and we're happy to be a part of it. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 239 - Bill Shufelt, Athletic Brewing

i-1-90404650-how-athletic-brewing-made-nonalcoholic-beer-cool.jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! We’ve got something a little different for you today. We’re talking to Bill Shufelt of Connecticut’s non-alcoholic brewery, Athletic Brewing. We’ve never had an NA brewer on the show, and frankly we were a little skeptical. it ended up being a fun talk, though, and lead to a discussion about wellness and exercise and why non-alcoholic beers (with good flavor!) make sense in today’s world. We probably won’t be switching to these altogether anytime soon, but we can appreciate that they exist and that folks like Bill are expanding craft flavors in new and interesting directions. Have you guys tried any new NA beers? Tune in and let us know what you think!

Happy Monday, Thieves! It's been a rough week for Founders Brewing Co. A discrimination lawsuit that has been making its way through the legal process keeps revealing new allegations against the Michigan-based brewery (now owned by Mahou San Miguel).

Last Monday we recorded a listener mail episode and many of you asked our take on the situation. So, we offer up our hot take on Founders (this before they decided to close their Detroit taproom indefinitely and before their diversity manager resigned, posting her letter on Twitter) and encourage you to chime in on our Facebook with your thoughts.

Is this current news going to stop you from drinking Founders in the future?

From there we tackle bottle size, and Justin brought us some beers for the black glass that he obtained from a nearby bodega. It doesn't get sloppy, but it's a lively conversation that's closely monitored by Mr. Brian Casse.

Let us know what you think by chiming in on our social media pages or simply by emailing us at stealthisbeerpodcast@gmail.com

Happy Monday, Thieves! The beer world is ever expanding and now and again we find it helpful to check in with brewers and writers from other countries to find out what's happening in their neck of the woods. On a recent Monday we ventured to a small craft brewery in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey because Holl's old friend Jaime Ojeda Selamé was visiting from Chile and wanted to check out some breweries.

It just so happened that the brewery was Carton and the name sake, Augie was there. Casse happened to be around as well, so we recorded a very special episode. Jaime is a writer, brewer, bar owner, and professional beer judge and was able to fill us in on what's happening with the Chilean beer scene and how it's grown over the last few years but is still very much in the shadow of wine.

For the black glass he brought one beer that once again proved that you just can't help but respect the classics.

Episode 234 - Greg Engert, The Grand Delancey (and Churchkey, etc.)

IMG_3491.jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! Monday at 5:00 p.m. has us back at Treadwell Park with a return accomplice. The last time we hung out with Greg Engert it was at his bar in Washington, D.C., Churchkey. This time around he was visiting up in advance of opening his new space in New York.

He talks about the expansion into new markets and geeks out with us on proper service, serving temperature, and glassware. These are all things that don't get address enough so it's great to hear his opinion on it.

Then, of course, we talk cask ale. Proper cask ale. It's the best kind of nerdy episode.

Look for his new spot, The Grand Delancey opening soon on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. There's an excellent chance we'll be there a lot. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 233 - Jesse Ferguson, Interboro Spirits & Ales

STB @ INTERBORO.jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! We have a familiar voice back on the show today. We were recently in Brooklyn at Interboro Spirits & Ales, where Augie was making a collaboration beer with his former brewing partner Jesse. After the brew day was done, we sat down and chatted about their shared past and how each has evolved in the intervening years. It was a good talk, a fun episode, and a lot of reminiscing. Episode 232 - Christian Weber, Common Roots Brewing

Christian+Weber+Common+Roots+Brewing+Company.jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! If you hang out at breweries long enough you'll start to hear about the camaraderie that exists among the brewers and owners. This isn't just lip service. So many of them are actually friends while being competitors. There aren't a lot of other industries where that's common. They brew together, travel together, and drink together. They are also quick to jump in to help when someone is in need.

Our accomplice today has experienced this first hand. When Christian Weber's Common Roots Brewing Co. went up in flames earlier this year, the last bits of fire weren't even out before brewers rushed in to help. Together with the local community, and beer fans from across the country, the brewery was able to set up a fundraising campaign that has kept employees going through the down time and to get Common Roots brewing again, all while building a whole new brewery.

Christian walks us through that fateful night, talks about what he was able to save, and what he hopes the future holds. Plus, we dangle the hope of another live show that Justin needs to coordinate. Tune in and let us know what you think!

phil-mark-two raods.jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! We have a great show for you this week with Phil Markowski of Two Roads Brewing. Phil needs no introduction but here’s a quick recap: he began brewing in the late 80’s at New England Brewing Company before moving to the revered Southampton Publick House. In 2012, he opened Two Roads back in Connecticut as a contract-focused brewery that also produced a killer lineup of house brand beers. As Two Roads’ brew master, he’s likely overseen production of some of your favorite beers in the last 7 years. Two Roads just recently opened Area 2, a sour and wild ale facility adjacent to their main facility. We talk about all this and more. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 229 - Marco Leyte-Vidal, Unseen Creatures Brewing

IMG_9108.jpeg

Happy Labor Day, Thieves! Earlier this summer, Marco Leyte-Vidal of Unseen Creatures Brewing in Miami stopped by Treadwell Park. To keep with the theme of the holiday we talked about what goes into starting a brewery these days. Hint: a lot of patience and hard work.

An avid homebrewer, Marco is getting ready to open his own place and talks about his inspirations, plans for the future, and the beers that he is excited to make.

For the black glass Marco poured some faves from friends and we were the richer for it. Tune in to the episode here or wherever you get your podcasts, and let us know what you think!

Episode 228 - Jeffrey Stuffings, Jester King Brewery, is back

Jeffrey-Stuffings-Jester-King-Brewery-Featured.png

Hey Y'all. We're back in Boston for a second week. Still hungover but very excited to welcome Jeffrey Stuffings of Jester King in Texas. As the makers of some of the finer farmhouse ales and Belgian-inspired beers in the United States, we had a lot to talk about with Jeff.  From why language is important in classifying the beers he makes (and the efforts being made to get brewers and drinkers to use the right words, to his plan for the farm just outside of Austin.

Hint: it involves wine. Double hint: Augie gets excited. You guessed it: John Holl offers a deep sigh.

For the black glass Jeff goes local and easy on us. His picks offer insight to his region and American beer in general. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 227 - Charles Rapadas and Vince Quitugua, Three Chiefs Brewing

20190810_085020.jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! A few weeks back the folks at Trillium hosted a beer festival. Carton was invited to pour and Holl decided to tag along. Of course we used the excursion as a chance to set up insanely early in a hotel lobby to record with some folks. The day before Holl was hitting the barleywine. Augie was hosting a party in his room until the early hours. So, get ready for some hungover radio.

This week we're excited to welcome Charles Rapadas and Vince Quitugua of Three Chiefs Brewing in California. They have been making beer professionally for about a year now, but are still beer fans and enthusiasts.

We go deep into the process of their pastry stouts, including FÄHÄ, a coconut candy stout. They shed some light on their upcoming expansion into a new space, and ways to combat fake beer.

For the black glass these fine gentlemen went deep into their cellars and pulled out some vintage gems that were a perfect way to start the morning and then get ready for a full day of drinking. Tune in and let us know what you think!

Episode 226 - Blake Arrowood & Jake Meglio, Arrowood Farm Brewery

16-07-28_Arrowood_0005.jpg

Happy Monday, Thieves! We're convinced Justin is working on a piece about farmhouse breweries. Maybe you've noticed that he's booked some of the better ones in the region on the show lately. We sure have. But, that's not a complaint because it means that on a day like today we get to sit down with Blake Arrowood, the namesake at the Arrowood Farm-Brewery, and brewer Jake Meglio in Accord, NY. And they are serious about brewing with what comes from their land. We talk about their 100% farm grown beer as well as the difficulties and benefits working the land bring to each pint. Make sure you visit the farm or their tasting room in New Paltz. We might just tag along with Justin as he does "field research."

Episode 225 - Travis Kauffman & Joey Pepper, Folksbier

_MG_8447.JPG

We love it when our friends hit the big time. For example, a few weeks ago John got an email from a fancy NYC public relations firm pitching the guys from Folksbier to come onto the show. We thought it was odd because we know Travis Kauffman and Joey Pepper pretty well. We've visited before and often drink their beer, they've been on the show before. Justin practically lives there.

So, of course we had them back on and when they brought their rep with them, we gave them the appropriate shit. All. Episode. Long.

Of course, throughout the rest of the show, we talked about brewery growth, recipe development, and how they are big big time with public relations professionals. Tune in and let us know what you think!
